An Adventure a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

As we wait to board our flight back home and bracing ourselves for the temperatures in Mississauga, I’m thinking phew. We survived without any major issues (my mother-in-law only locked herself out on the veranda but we rescued her 30 mins later), we didn’t lose anyone and I think the folks had some fun along the way.

Delray is busting out the Christmas decor and it’s looking super festive.  I have to say it doesn’t bother me one bit to see Christmas with no snow or cold weather. Delray always puts up a large tree in the center square and we are always in awe of its size every year. We also took a little road trip on Saturday to West Palm Beach to see their sand Christmas Tree and local outdoor market. I think their favourite night was last night. It started out with Martinis, pasta, pizza and vino at Elizabetta’s on the strip. The night continued further down the strip where we took them to the local bar Johnny Brown’s, it was Karaoke night with a live band. It was a blast, the talent in Delray was popping and we got the parents to enjoy a few more beverages. They were feeling no pain and they looked so happy. Not bad for a Monday night…

Beach days were enjoyed and some last minute dips in the ocean were taken to soak in that vitamin sea! As we wind down here are 10 things I learned about travelling with our parents:

10. Everything just takes longer.

9. They need to tell you things multiple times even if they don’t have dementia.

8. The dad’s always feel the need to narrate as they do things… it’s so funny.

7. Meals are very important events that they look forward to.

6. The eyesight and hearing are either going, or they are doing it on purpose to ignore stuff.

5. Repeating yourself is the new form of communication.

4. Buckling seatbelts can be a difficult task in the backseat.

3. Your new role as a caregiver helps you explore skill sets you didn’t know you had!

2. Appreciate all the moments, good or bad… one day they will be memories you cherish.

1. If you thought you need patience for your kids just wait…this is a whole new level of patience.

The countdown begins for our Christmas visit marathon, trying to see all the friends and family we can before coming back to my happy place.
