Vamos a Costa Rica!

Okay this place is incredible! So glad we picked this as our newest adventure. Costa Rica has always been a place I wanted to visit, since it could have been where I grew up. When I was around 15 years old, my dad got offered a job down here and obviously he didn’t take it but I’ve often wondered what opportunity I missed out on.

We flew out this morning on a direct flight from Fort Lauderdale to San José on one of my favourite airlines, Spirit! Seriously awesome crew and way more room than Air Canada Rouge.

Going through customs was some serious business. They wanted to know what your occupation was and proof of your return flight and accommodation. Once we made it through, they have conveniently placed a SIM card desk in baggage claim and for $20 you can get more than enough for your visit.

Next we set off to pick up our rental car and that’s when our 3 hour adventure to our first stop began. The drive to La Fortuna was full of twists and turns along narrow roads (which are shared with trucks and busses too), while travelling up and down the scenic mountains. Along the way we got to see what real life in Costa Rica looks like. Small houses often with gates and bars, lots of local places to eat, even shops right along the roadside. You could see animals roaming in fields, random waterfalls popping up out of nowhere and children playing outdoors among the beautiful lush landscape.

Absolutely love our quaint lodge San Bosco Inn, located walking distance to the town’s main strip and with views of the volcano from our balcony. Can’t beat the price at $90(Canadian) a night and it includes breakfast and free entry to the hot springs.

La Fortuna, also known as La Fortuna de San Carlos, is undoubtedly one of Costa Rica’s most talked about destinations. While researching for this trip, it was on every list and a must see by travel writers and tour operators. But does La Fortuna live up to the hype? I’m thinking YES…. So far on day one the view of the volcano is breathtaking, the people are lovely and the food was a mix of flavours that created magic.

Casado con Pollo (A casado is a Costa Rican meal using rice, black beans, plantains, salad, a tortilla, and an optional protein source)

Local Imperial Beer

Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to strike up a conversation with anyone tonight but I’m sure there will be plenty of time for that… I have a feeling the people here are just as diverse as the landscape and have many stories to share.
